December Birchbox ❄️

As you may have realised I haven't posted anything in the 'Beauty' section of the blog up until now. I guess this is because I'm not really that much of an expert! I like to keep my make up simple and to be honest I'm a bit of a creature of habit and I rarely try new products but this is something that needs to change.

Beauty subscription boxes are such a great idea and give you the chance to sample products before you buy them & you definitely won't be stuck for choice... there  are so many different companies now offering this service. I decided to start with Birchbox, mainly because my lovely friend Josefine ordered her first box last month and she was really impressed, she gave me a code and this meant that I only actually paid £7.95 for my first box!

Birchbox is £10 / month + p&p and includes 5 products, there are various subscription options but I chose the monthly one. At least one product is full size which is great and usually you are given a code for a free product, however I couldn't use one this month as you cannot combine two codes :(

I set up my profile and this means just answering a few questions, it's really worth it because it means the products they send are kind of tailored to you... ie. skin type / tone match etc. My box only took a few days to arrive and the packaging is so beautiful!

My box contained:

Ciaté London : Fierce Flicks Eyeliner (full size)
RRP £ 15.00

Benefit Cosmetics : Benetint
RRP £ 24.50*

Elemis : Hydra-Boost Day Cream
RRP £ 39.00*

Percy & Reed : Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Balm
RRP £18.00*

Anatomicals : Smoother Butts Love Coconuts and Mango Body Lotion
RRP £ 3.99*

*RRPs correspond to full size items & prices at birchbox.co.uk/shop

Ciaté London : Fierce Flicks Eyeliner (full size)

Ok, so I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I don't actually wear eyeliner. Eeeeeek...sorry!
When I was younger I wouldn't be seen dead without it, but as I've got older I guess I've become a little more confident and also I have less time to faff around getting ready so eyeliner definitely isn't part of my daily routine. I'm so used to not wearing it that if I do I kind of feel like I look a bit weird, I'll sometimes wear it on a night out but I tend to avoid the stress of getting flicks to match. My little sister Isabelle is the total opposite... she honestly has the best brows and best eyeliner ever (I hate her sometimes) so I'm going to give this product to her. This eyeliner retails at £ 15.00 which is more than I paid for the whole box so I'm really happy with this one!

Benefit Cosmetics : Benetint

Unfortunately I think this is the product I was most dissapointed in this month, not because it's not a great product, just because I've tried it before and I didn't really get on with it, I would've really liked to have been able to try something different from the benefit range. I used to be pretty obsessed with Benefit and went through a stage of trying a lot of their products, I used their 'Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow' foundation for a long time and some of their eyeshadows are really lovely. This product can be used as a cheek or lip stain but I'm not a fan of the colour, especially on my cheeks... however this may just be because I don't wear a blusher so I'm not used to having 'pink' on my face. I'm going to try and use this on my lips and see how I get on, so many people rant about this product so I must be able to find some use for it!

Elemis : Hydra-Boost Day Cream

I used this product this morning after cleansing my face and I'm really impressed. This is a day cream for dry skin which is perfect for me right now, I have random break outs of dry skin on my face during winter and I tend to leave it because I'm always worried that using a cream could make things worse as usually the areas are quite sensitive. The cream is quite thick but dries in quickly and it isn't at all greasy or shiny, a particular problem area is around my nose, it's really dry and itchy but this cream already seems to be helping after just one application! I'm going to keep using it over the next few days and if the dryness continues to improve I will definitely buy the full size product.

Percy & Reed : Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Balm

Percy & Reed isn't really a brand I've used before, I think we have the hairspray in a cupboard at work but I don't really use it, however I really love their packaging, the illustrations are so cute! I haven't used this product yet as it is meant to prime your hair before styling. I'm trying to avoid using heat on my hair at the moment as I spent an awful lot of money having it cut and coloured at Daniel Galvin a few months back and I want it to stay as healthy as possible between cuts! When I next straighten my hair I will use this before hand.

Anatomicals : Smoother Butts Love Coconuts and Mango Body Lotion

This product is an all over body lotion and I've used some 'Anatomicals' products before, mainly for bath time as they smell so yummy. This lotion however is a tiny bit sickly, I'd describe it as a 'pina colada' kind of smell and I think if you covered your whole body in this you'd end up with a bit a headache! I'm also not sure how it would be for sensitive skin as it is so highly perfumed, but it is paraben free atleast. I'll see how I get on with this, but I think it's something I'd pop in my little box that I keep on my desk at work just for if it is needed.

Overall I'm really impressed with the value for money of this box. The packaging is lovely and for just £ 10.00 a month I really do think it is worth it. As you can tell above I'm not necessarily head over heels about all of these products but it is never going to be the case that you love absolutely everything that you receive. I'm going to stick with this until January and then make a decision about whether to continue my subscription. I'll probably order a few different boxes in the new year also so I will review these for you too!
